Student Senate Constitution
Article I: Name
The name of this organization is the Classical Magnet School Student Senate of Hartford, Connecticut..
Article II: Purpose
The purposes of the Classical Magnet School Student Senate are: to insure the student voice within the school; to encourage students to participate in decision-making processes; to increase the diversity of student participation, and to encourage leadership development among all students.
Article III: Official Student Bodies
The recognized student bodies are the academic classes within the Classical Magnet School, grades six through twelve.
Article IV: Participation and Membership
Any student of the Classical Magnet School in good standing, academic and otherwise, may be a member of the Classical Magnet School Senate.
Each class will elect a class President, class Vice President, and two Senators. Each of these elected officers will be the voting members of the Classical Magnet Student Senate.
Members of the Classical Magnet Student Senate will be elected by the academic classes.
Members of the Classical Magnet Student Senate will attend the regular monthly meetings of the senate.
Any member of the student body may attend the meetings of the Classical Magnet School Senate.
Article V: Elections
The entire student body of the Classical Magnet School will elect a President, Vice-President and Secretray of the Student Senate within the last thirty calendar days of the school year.
Each class, with the exception of the incoming sixth grade, will hold elections for President, Vice President, and two Senators within the last thirty calendar days of the school year. The incoming sixth grade will elect its officers within the first twenty calendar days of November.
The term of office will be from the last day of the school year until the last day of the next school year.
The existing Classical Magnet School Senate will hold and supervise the elections of these officers. Academic classes may nominate and elect other class officers as needed. However these officers will not be members of the Classical Magnet School Student Senate.
Article VI: Duties of Elected Members
The President, Vice President and Secretary of the Classical Magnet School Student Senate will insure that the meetings are run in an orderly and business-like manner. They will set the agenda for each meeting with the help of the student senate adviser. The President, or Vice President, will represent the student senate at the monthly committees meeting.
The Student Senate Secretary will maintain the minutes of all Student Senate meetings, forward all student proposal to the Presidents’ committee and keep copies of the agendas.
The class Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Senators will faithfully attend the regular meetings of the Classical Magnet School Senate. Failure to attend two meetings, regardless of the reason, will constitute a violation of this obligation.
State of Emergency
In the event that a class fails to elect its full number of officers to the School Senate, at a subsequent meeting of the full senate, members of the class may petition to senate for appointment to an office. With the approval of a majority of the entire senate, petitioning candidates may be seated.
